The Day[9] Daily #100 is one of the videos I keep coming back to when I feel down/angry at myself. I decided to draw one very valuable lesson I learned from there which also coincided with a big chunk of my undergraduate studies (biopsychology). I had forgotten how much I loved drawing neurons, synapses and other brain-y things!! Brings back happy memories from university.

Whew, managed to make one on the first target date (1/25)! I have enormously underestimated how much time this would take haha. Instead of spending a few hours (2-3) I spent probably twice as much or more (6-ish). Since the content was dense, it took me about 20 minutes to consolidate, a few hours to make a rough draft, and another few hours to do the final draft. "What are one's needs as a person?" was one of the videos that permanently changed my everyday behavior for the better. So I thought I'd feature this one as a token of thanks :) Well, I did it! I started this project in December 2019 and I didn't expect to finish it until February but I managed to finish before the start date of my next project :)
I decided to draw all 34 themes from CliftonStrengths because I only really knew what my top 5 were at the time, and I wanted to learn more about all of them. I wanted to use the 34 themes as a tool that helps me think more positively about not only myself but also about other people. One thing I learned from this exercise: "weaknesses" can be re-framed as strengths in the wrong context. Now that I have a better idea of what the 34 themes are individually, I am considering creating diagrams that show how I see the different strengths interacting with each other. I'm debuting as a DayKnight and I'm PROUD of it! What is a DayKnight? Individuals who are part of the Day[9] community are called DayKnights. Who is Day[9]? I can pull up a quick blurb from Wikipedia: "["Day[9]" or Sean Plott] is an American esports commentator, player, event host, and game designer. Plott is best known for his contributions in the professional StarCraft scene, where he regularly appeared first as a player and later as a commentator and host at various tournaments for the game for many years." ...but for me, nothing can explain who Day[9] is better than himself. Several years ago a good friend of mine showed me this video of Day[9] sharing his experiences growing up with StarCraft and to me this captures his identity. Also I will mention that the video is 2 hours long but it was one of the best 2 hours I've spent in my life. This man is a master of storytelling so you get to live his life vicariously - it's incredible how much I laughed, teared up, and learned how to be a better person in ONLY 2 hours.
I was gone for a while but I wasn't away from my keyboard - for the past month or so, I was working hard to get my pixel art muscles back again! Here's a sneaky peak of what I am working on: Yes, that is a bunny with a buckler and a sword. And yes, that is a bunny with a tower shield. With a bunny on it.
Some non-bunny updates can be found in the portfolio.
I am in the process of reorganizing this website because the purpose shifted over the course of a year. When I started writing back in fall 2018, my intention was to write a series on management and leadership since I was most familiar with those topics the most and I cared about them (I still do). But since then, I changed jobs and the scope of my work changed from administrative/troubleshooting to something slightly different: administrative/troubleshooting PLUS helping undergraduate students find their own ways to be excellent (as opposed to achieving excellence exclusively by following a set of instructions). This got me thinking about myself as well, and so the posts in 2019 ended up being more introspective than what I originally expected.
Now this website is organized a bit differently from what it used to be (and is subject to additional change) - it has a "journal" section (here) and a "portfolio" section. I plan to continue documenting all my musings here in the journal section. The art section currently has some doodles that I had produced years ago. My goal is to add more to it in the near future. Drawing used to be a big (vital) part of my life, and that has been neglected ever since I started working full time... so I thought I'd make a conscious attempt to bring it back. We will see how this goes... I (finally) started playing the game Celeste recently, and completed Chapter 8 (haven't done the B and C-sides yet).
Since this post does address the main story, if you have not played this game and you wish to avoid spoilers, do not read past this point! (Play it first!) |
